When life gets busy as it often does and you need a quick and convenient snack, your first thought may be to reach for items containing unhealthy ingredients such as sugar-filled protein and energy bars, trail mixes with candies or chocolate, or bagged chips.
All the while, you may be shunning nuts and seeds from your diet, believing the fat content could lead to weight gain.
In reality, many nuts make for a near-ideal snack given their healthy fat, vitamin, antioxidant and fiber content. If you’ve avoided them out of concern for your weight, I strongly urge you to reconsider, and here’s why…
Nuts: Nature’s Original Snack Food
Why do I believe that many nuts make an excellent snack food?
Nuts are an excellent source of antioxidants, vitamins and minerals. They have been known to boost your heart and overall health. In fact, a recent study revealed that nut eaters gained several health benefits compared to non-nut eaters, including lower weight and systolic blood pressure, decreased waist circumference and a lower risk of diabetes and metabolic syndrome.
But eating just any nut won’t satisfy these benefits. It’s best to choose raw, organic nuts and avoid those that are irradiated, pasteurized or coated in sugar.
Generally speaking, each type of nut will offer a slightly different mix of nutrients for your health. Some great options are macadamia nuts, pecans, walnuts, hazelnuts and almonds. In fact, a study in the Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry even revealed that a 1-ounce serving of almonds has a similar amount of total polyphenols as a cup of steamed broccoli or green tea.
One of the healthiest aspects of almonds is their skins, as they are rich in antioxidants including phenols, flavonoids and phenolic acids, which are typically associated with vegetables and fruits.
Instead of grabbing the first sugar-laden treat you see when you need a quick snack, consider packing raw, organic almonds as a healthful and filling option.
Even When Labeled Raw, Most Almonds in the U.S. Are Pasteurized
The problem with most almonds in North America is pasteurization. The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) implemented a mandatory pasteurization program for almonds in 2007. If you purchase almonds in North America, they will most likely have gone through one of the following pasteurization methods:
- Oil roasting, dry roasting or blanching
- Steam processing
- Propylene Oxide (PPO) treatment — a highly toxic flammable chemical compound once used as a racing fuel before it was prohibited for safety reasons
What’s alarming is that pasteurized almonds sold in the U.S. can still be labeled “raw” even though they’ve been subjected to one of the damaging treatment processes listed above.
The Almond Board of California states they have conducted independent nutritional lab analyses that show pasteurization does not degrade the nutritional value of almonds. Sound familiar? This is exactly what was falsely claimed for pasteurized milk. However, we know that raw milk and pasteurized milk are two very different foods from a health standpoint, and it stands to reason that raw and pasteurized almonds are too.
