Many people rely on energy drinks to boost their physical and mental energy. Do you?
No matter your end goal... gain energy to push through fatigue, raise your metabolism to help burn body fat, maintain your blood flow, pump your muscles, or simply sharpen your mind... the drink you choose matters.
The typical way energy and performance-boosting drinks work is through added caffeine and sugars.
But the caffeine isn’t usually the naturally occurring caffeine you get from coffee or tea. Energy drinks or ‘functional beverages’ as they’re called in the industry, typically contain synthetic caffeine.
If the energy drink doesn’t contain coffee or tea, and lists ‘caffeine’ on its label, you can assume it is synthetic caffeine.
So what exactly is synthetic caffeine and where does it come from?
While naturally occurring caffeine comes from plant parts like coffee beans, tea leaves, and cocoa nuts, synthetic caffeine comes mostly from big factories in China.
First developed by the Nazis in 1942 and later produced by Monsanto, synthetic caffeine starts with ammonia that converts to urea. Then it’s combined with various chemicals to create the final product.
The Caffeine Con That Few People Know About
Here’s the problem with synthetic caffeine... Few people realize they’re consuming it! Most don’t know that the caffeine in energy drinks isn’t the same as the caffeine in coffee or tea.
Small to moderate amounts of naturally occurring caffeine in coffee, combined with its valuable antioxidants, are considered beneficial for health. However, too much synthetic caffeine can be disastrous.
Synthetic caffeine is potent stuff. One tablespoon of the chemical powder is equivalent to drinking 50 cups of coffee or 192 cola soft drinks at once – enough to kill you.
Just one-fourth of a teaspoon can make your heart race and bring on anxiety.
Drink enough energy drinks, one after another quickly enough, and you could find yourself in serious trouble...
Compared to the naturally occurring caffeine in coffee and tea, there are four main differences with synthetic caffeine:
- Absorbs through your digestive system faster, leading to a quicker rush.
- Because it causes a faster spike, it results in a quicker crash.
- Lacks the vitamins and nutrients found in naturally occurring caffeine to help buffer its effects.
- Typically combined with sugars to mimic naturally occurring caffeine’s effects.
Experts and researchers are becoming increasingly alarmed over the rising use of synthetic caffeine in so-called energy and performance beverages.
In one year alone, there were 6,724 calls to poison centers regarding energy drink consumption.
Another study looked at calls concerning adverse effects from energy drinks with caffeine-containing additives, such as guarana. Guarana is a plant whose seeds are high in caffeine.
Although not synthetic caffeine, these potent sources of caffeine can be problematic. There were 534 calls in that same one-year period for energy drinks with these types of caffeine-containing additives.
No matter the source, the use of caffeine-containing additives and simply too much caffeine are just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to energy drinks’ problems...
Synthetic Caffeine + Sweeteners = Even More Trouble
As I pointed out earlier, many of today’s energy and performance drinks are designed to use synthetic caffeine along with sweeteners to provide their mental and physical boost.
Many products contain not only artificial sweeteners, but added sugars, too. Some even contain high fructose corn syrup – the worst type of sugar for your health.
Table sugar isn’t much better... once it breaks down in your body to equal parts of fructose and glucose, it closely resembles high fructose corn syrup.
And you probably already know how I feel about artificial sweeteners. I recommend avoiding them at all costs.
In recent years, researchers have discovered artificial sweeteners can raise your risk of obesity and diabetes even more than sugar. Most of them stimulate your appetite, boost your cravings for carbs and trick your body into storing fat.

Aspartame has been shown to...

- Contribute to methanol toxicity and the formation of toxic formaldehyde, leading to dementia.

Sucralose has been shown to....

Acesulfame Potassium (K) has been shown to...

These recent findings make it very clear to me that none of these artificial sweeteners belong in any energy drink. And of course, I don’t recommend consuming fructose or table sugar regularly either.
What’s Really in The Top Selling Five Energy Drinks
I decided to take a closer look at what’s actually in energy drinks and to see if my suspicions about synthetic caffeine and sweeteners held true for the top selling products.
Defining energy drinks as “functional beverages designed to boost mental and physical energy”, Statistica lists the top selling energy drinks, based on sales. These leading five products alone generated a whopping $6,203 million in sales in 2017! Here’s what we discovered was in them...

The Other Side of Nitric Oxide That Not Everyone Knows About
Beyond nitric oxide’s ability to help you build muscle, many people are unaware of nitric oxide’s other potential benefits...
To fully understand how NO may benefit your health, you need to know more about how it’s produced in your body.
If you could peek inside your blood vessels, you would see that they are lined with a thin layer of cells. This is called the endothelium.
These endothelial cells line your entire circulatory system, from your heart to the smallest capillaries in your extremities.
Nitric oxide gas is continually produced inside these special cells from one of at least two different pathways: NO synthase (NOS) dependent and NOS independent.
L-arginine is the main precursor for the first pathway, and nitrate and nitrite are the main substrates for the NOS independent pathway.
Nitric oxide gas acts as an important signaling molecule, or one that plays a crucial role in cellular communications to help:

The 1992 “Molecule of the Year” and 1998 Nobel Prize Winner - Key to Brain and Central Nervous System Communications

Here’s what the researchers discovered at the end of the six-week study:
- Combining beet juice with exercise increased blood flow and delivered more oxygen to brain tissues.
- The group consuming beet juice had much higher levels of nitrate in their bodies than the placebo group after exercise.
- The group who exercised and drank beet juice had brain networks that more closely resembled those of younger adults, suggesting greater neuroplasticity and/or the ability to form new neural pathways.
I believe these findings are very exciting news for anyone who wants to optimize their cognitive performance and help maintain brain health as they age.
Why You Could Use an NO Boost, Even If You’re Not a High Performance Athlete
