Lambs are young sheep, and are part of a group of mammals called ruminants. Like cows, buffalo, bison and goats, they have unique digestive systems that allow them to thrive on grasses and plants.
When living freely on pasture lands, young lambs are nursed by their mothers until they’re naturally weaned onto a grass diet. Research shows that pasture feeding provides the most optimum nutrition for lambs and results in the best-quality meat.
When lambs are raised conventionally, they may be raised on pasture first but are typically “grain-finished.” Feeding the animals grains towards the end of their lives fatten them up before slaughter.
Conventionally raised lambs are also taken away from their mothers right after their first feeding, depriving them the advantages of nursing and later grazing on pasture for the rest of their lives after weaning.
There are also differences in the fat profiles of the meat from lambs who are 100% grass fed and those that are conventionally raised.
Grass fed and grass finished lamb contains at least 25% higher levels of omega-3 fats and greater amounts of other healthy essential fats than conventionally raised lamb.
How does that happen? Consuming green plants promotes a rumen fermentation pH of 7 in the animal that encourages the creation of omega-3s. When animals eat grains, rumen pH drops to 5 or lower, disrupting omega-3 production and promoting the production of less-healthy omega-6s instead.

Most people think first of fish when considering how to meet their omega-3 needs, but fish may not be the only source.

Your body can’t produce omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids, so you must get these “essential” fats from your diet.
