One thing that continues to concern me as time marches on… is the quality of the world's food supply.
You would think that through all the advances in modern technology, our sources of food would have improved over time. Unfortunately the emphasis has been on industrial efficiency and lower costs, not on quality of food.
Granted, there are many good sources of all-natural organic food as well as free-range and grass-fed livestock. But some of these sources of wholesome food tend to be expensive… and not everyone can afford to buy them. Plus, the best sources are not always available to everyone.
When you couple this challenge of finding good, wholesome sources of food with the fact most people eat far too much processed food, you can quickly understand why vitamin and mineral deficiencies are rampant.
The good news is in most cases practical solutions exist to help offset vitamin and mineral deficiencies… and I'll let you in on one such case coming up.
But first, there's another issue you should know about…
50% of Vital Nutrients Could be Lost Before Food Ever Reaches Your Table
A number of carefully controlled studies have provided startling evidence that by the time food reaches your table, serious nutrient content could already be lost.
Some estimates report the nutrient value lost as high as 50%!
This is largely due to conventional farming methods that rely heavily on chemical fertilizers and pesticides. These chemicals deplete the soil of nutrients... nutrients that must be absorbed by plants in order to be passed on to you.
And it doesn't end there.
In many cases, you may further deplete the nutrients in your food by the way you prepare it. For most food, cooking it will seriously impair its nutritional value… particularly over-cooking, which many people do.
You can boil, poach, or steam your food without losing much of the valuable vitamins and minerals. But when microwaving, frying, and charbroiling food…
you lose valuable nutrients and you could also be putting your health at risk as well.
So, realizing you don't always consume adequate amounts of whole unprocessed food, and knowing how easy it is for valuable nutrients to be destroyed… you should have a better understanding of why I believe, under certain circumstances, adding specific supplements to complement your diet could be a sound move.
Here's a case in point...
Why Did it Take Decades to Recognize the
Importance of this Essential Mineral?
Up until 1961, zinc was overlooked as a possible mineral deficiency in humans.* Since the early 1900s, for over 60 years it was recognized as critical for the growth of plants and animals… but not humans.
Why wasn't this vital mineral recognized for its importance in human growth?*
Reasons are somewhat ambiguous as to why this essential mineral was overlooked… one of the reasons could be that much of the medical world was focused on iron deficiency.
Here's a brief 'time-capsule' on how this essential mineral's deficiency concerns were slowly recognized and identified to the public…
- Things started to change in 1974 when the Food and Nutrition Board of the US National Academy of Sciences made a landmark decision to declare zinc an essential nutrient… recommended dietary allowances for humans soon followed.
- Interestingly enough, global awareness of the potential consequences of deficiency with this mineral took several more years to really get going. For example, in a 2004 report by UNICEF called "Vitamin and Mineral Deficiency – A Global Damage Assessment Report," the publication failed to mention zinc at all.
- However, a 2009 report entitled "Investing in the Future –
A United Call to Action on Vitamin and Mineral Deficiencies," did identify zinc
as an important micronutrient because of the large numbers of people around
the world who were deficient and up to 12% of Americans may be deficient.
Experts say as many as 2 billion people around the world may not get enough of this essential mineral in what they eat.
Plus, this issue is not just confined to developing countries… there could be issues in affluent, industrialized countries as well.
But, what's all the fuss about, and…
Why Do I Believe this Mineral is So Important?
Basically, zinc is a mineral/metal… and is called an essential trace element because small amounts are necessary for your overall health.*
And as one of the most important essential minerals, zinc is involved in hundreds of vital enzymatic reactions in your body.*
From a technical physiological standpoint, zinc is found in your body almost exclusively as elemental zinc bound to cellular proteins with a high affinity for electrons… enabling interactions with several amino acid side chains.
But what role does zinc play in your overall well-being?*
As an essential mineral, zinc is suggested to play critical roles in…
- Regulating gene expression and supporting healthy cellular growth…*
- Supporting immune function and maintaining a healthy metabolic rate…*
- Maintaining a normal sense of taste and smell...*
- Promoting healthy eyes…*
- Supporting normal growth*
Zinc is an essential trace mineral with more biological roles than all the other trace elements combined. But the scary part is your body does not manufacture zinc and has no way to store it.
So where can you get the zinc your body needs?
Your Best Sources of This Mineral? You Don't Have to Look Far…
The ideal way to get zinc is through the food you consume on a daily basis.
This should be fairly straight-forward if you eat some of the following foods…
|Food sources containing zinc:
|Spinach and sea vegetables
|Raw milk and cheese
But hold on a second… remember, you may be eating these types of foods on a regular basis and still not be getting adequate amounts of zinc. How could that happen?
Well, as I mentioned before, with the over-processing of food in the food chain and often times the over-cooking, adequate amounts of zinc may never enter your body for absorption.
Here's just an example of some zinc deficiency statistics showing how it's not always just a problem in developing countries…
- Approximately 12% of all Americans do not consume the RDI for zinc and could be at risk for deficiency.
- The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reports that 35-45% of elderly adults in US are at risk for inadequate intake of zinc.
- Experts say as many as 2 billion people around the world have diets deficient in zinc.
It's always been my recommendation and something I practice myself, to get the majority of necessary nourishment of vitamins and minerals from food … and not from supplements.
However, as we've already learned, that may not always be practical for everyone…
How to Find Out if Your Levels are Low?
Some common signs to watch out for… for potential evidence of low zinc levels include…
- A lack of appetite…
- Occasional moodiness…
- Less keen sense of taste or smell…
If you have any of these symptoms, you should contact your healthcare professional for an evaluation. What complicates the problem is there are a variety of different tests available but not all of them provide an accurate picture.
Here are some samples of the variety of zinc evaluation tests available…
- Oral taste test – Quick 10 second test can be done at home or in your healthcare provider's office.
- Serum test – Simplest way of determining zinc deficiency but there are factors that can cause inaccuracies.
- Plasma test– Main lab test performed to determine zinc status. It can be insensitive
to marginal deficiencies.
- Tolerance test – Measures the change in plasma zinc after zinc is taken orally.
- Hair test – More often used by natural medicine doctors.
With the multitude of tests available to check your zinc status and with some of them more accurate than others, always consult with your healthcare professional to determine the right test for you.
Next, let's dig deeper as to why zinc is so important and…
How This Essential Trace Element Goes to Work for YOU*
We've already reviewed above some of the crucial roles zinc may play in your overall health.* But what else can it do for you?
Zinc is vital to your health because it potentially…*
- Helps maintain healthy blood sugar levels already in the normal range*
- Helps regulate protein synthesis*
- Supports a healthy respiratory system*
- Promotes healthy cell functioning and division*
- Helps support a normal-functioning GI tract*
- Helps protects against oxidative distress*
You should now understand more why I believe zinc is such a robust mineral… something you do not want to come up short in.
And speaking of how zinc may provide protection against oxidative distress, there's a little-known benefit few people are aware of about zinc… and that includes many healthcare professionals as well.*
Could Zinc Be an Antioxidant as Well?
You probably know about the importance of antioxidants… those robust nutrients that help neutralize free radicals and help protect your body from oxidative distress.
Well, extraordinary as it sounds, zinc is believed to function as an antioxidant agent.* Several research studies have reported on zinc's antioxidant capabilities.*
Since every day of your life you face exposure to oxidative distress from free radicals, I consider it a huge bonus that zinc may provide you with additional support.*
This is truly astounding information to learn how zinc can provide you with antioxidant benefits… over and above all the other potential benefits to your well-being.*
Are the Elderly at Risk for Zinc Deficiency?
One age group that could particularly benefit from adequate levels of zinc is the elderly.
As you age, more and more stress is applied to your immune system. So, as you grow older, you may need additional support for your immune system.
As was reported earlier, the CDC reports that 35-45% of elderly adults in the US could have inadequate dietary intake of zinc.
Low zinc levels in the elderly may increase the need for immune system support…*
On the positive side, one study reported that a dose of 30mg of zinc per day might be an adequate amount to help support an elderly person's immune system.*
Here's another group of folks that should be particularly concerned about proper zinc intake and levels…
If You're a Vegetarian, I Believe This is Important Information You Need to Know
Vegetarians are a particular group of people who should be on the lookout for telltale signs of low levels of zinc.
Because zinc is found mostly in many animal products, vegetarians may be at risk for zinc deficiency even though they usually consume high amounts of grains. And why is that?
The issue is that grains contain high levels of what's called, phytic acid. This compound binds to zinc and can reduce its absorption. It's basically believed that zinc from plant sources is just not well absorbed.
The bioavailability of zinc is lower in vegetarian diets than in non-vegetarian diets because vegetarians do not eat any meat. Plus vegetarians tend to eat high levels of legumes and whole grains which contain phytates that inhibit zinc absorption.
Suggestions and techniques for vegetarians to increase zinc bioavailability include…
- Soaking beans, grains, and seeds in water for several hours prior to cooking, and…
- Allowing them to sit after soaking until sprouts form, plus…
- Consuming more leavened grains as opposed to unleavened ones
In my opinion, as a group, vegetarians need to concern themselves with possible low levels of zinc. If you're a vegetarian, I would recommend you seek advice from a healthcare professional to make sure you're consuming adequate levels of zinc.
What to Look for in a High-Quality Supplement
Due to the issues I already pointed out about nutrients lost in the food supply chain, including possibly zinc, supplementation may be a consideration for protection against low levels.
But just like many other supplements I've reviewed and totally rejected over the years, there are some potential pitfalls facing you concerning zinc supplements.
Here's a simple list of important key factors I recommend you consider before settling on a zinc supplement source…
- Make sure the zinc supplement is formulated by a high-quality manufacturer – Don't settle for 2nd best or an inferior formula. Look for solid examples of high-quality assurance safeguards and independent objective laboratory testing.
- Don't just settle for what's necessarily on the label of the bottle – Dig deeper into finding out more info on whether the manufacturer stands behind the stability and efficacy of the formula.
- Stick to a dosage of less than 40mg per day –
This is the recommended adult upper limit. Since the potential for adverse
side effects exists at higher dosages, always consult with your healthcare
professional when considering higher dosages.
As much as my team and I were determined to make it easier for you to find a zinc supplement to satisfy the important selection factors outlined above, we inevitably came up short on our search. It does happen once in awhile that what the team finds just doesn't completely satisfy my high expectations.
But I'm not about to compromise on any of these key factors, so here's what I did…
Could a 'Triple' Complex Be More Effective?
I could have easily settled for a zinc supplement that satisfied most of my key selection factors…
But I wasn't about to do just that… I wanted more. Instead, I put my team to task to work with a phenomenal supplement developer to create our own powerful formula to meet.
And one of the first things my team did, when working with the developer's scientists, was to ask for an enhanced formula… my team and I were not about to be satisfied with an ordinary run-of-the-mill single complex formula.
After a great deal of research, the developer recommended a zinc supplement that did not use inferior zinc chloride but instead, made a complex of three outstanding zinc compounds…
- Zinc Gluconate
- Zinc Amino Acid Chelate
- Zinc Citrate
Why were these three zinc compounds recommended by the supplement developer? It's really quite simple… the scientists wanted to include those compounds they felt had a high potential for absorption and low potential for upsetting your GI tract.*
Here's more on why I continue to be impressed with this supplement developer and manufacturer… and why I consider them second to none.
In My Experience, I've Not Seen Many Manufacturers
Who Can Bring the 'Real Deal' Like THIS
Finding a high-quality manufacturer is always a challenging task for my development team. But it's always top priority with any of the healthful solutions I recommend… and as you can guess, Mercola Zinc Complex was no exception.
In addition to the supplement developer's innovation strengths mentioned above, here are some additional capabilities. They helped to further convince my team and I to choose them over others because this manufacturer…
- Has worldwide manufacturing facilities in North America, South America, and India, – Provides the company with the flexibility and opportunity to develop and incubate new ingredients around local cultures.
- Is committed to supplying only high-quality ingredients – The company has rigorous high-quality standards in place to carefully select high-quality raw materials and ingredients.
- As far as technical capabilities, has in-house QA/QC and R&D laboratory equipped with specialized instrumentation such as HPLC, GC, UV/VIS, Colorimeter, and ORAC instrumentation.
You should now have a real good idea why my team and I selected this manufacturer to provide a high-quality zinc mineral supplement for you.
How Does My 'Do-It-Yourself' Formula Stack Up?
In addition to the 'triple' complex formula my team worked with the developer's scientists on in coming up with an enhanced formula, let's take a quick look at how Mercola Zinc Complex stacks up against the rest of my recommended key selection factors…
