The idea of juicing raw vegetables to maximize your vegetable intake is very compelling. But let’s face it. You probably have a busy schedule, so it’s critical to find the most efficient way to juice.

However, when looking to bulk-juice in advance to save time and be more efficient, this can present some challenges of its own. Vegetable juice is perishable – so it’s best to drink immediately after juicing. But there are some techniques you can use to make it last longer… at least for about a day.

Here’s a handy list to help you get started in juicing, and even some tips for those who have been juicing for some time.

  • Start out by juicing vegetables that are easy to digest and tolerate – I recommend celery, fennel (anise), and cucumbers as your starting base. But everyone’s system is a bit unique. So, “listen” to your body when you first start juicing.

  • Give organic veggies a priority because they can save you time – With most organic vegetables, you don’t even have to remove the skin (like cucumbers). Plus, organic veggies have been grown without the use of pesticides and synthetic fertilizers.

  • Try other veggies when your system is ready – Once you feel you’re tolerating celery, fennel, and cucumbers, you can begin adding other leafy vegetables like kale, collards, parsley, dandelion greens, cabbage, endive, lettuce, and most any other dark green leafy vegetable.

  • Be sure to start with small amounts as most of the above vegetables can be quite bitter.

  • Here's a great juicing suggestion that's personally used in our kitchen here at the office.

    Depending on the size of the veggies used (preferably organic), this recipe yields about eight to ten 10-ounce glasses of delicious, hearty juice. Enjoy!!!!

    • 2 stalks of celery
    • 1 bundle of collards
    • 1 bundle of kale
    • 1 fennel
    • 2 cucumbers
    • 4 limes
    • ½ bag of frozen cranberries
  • If you need to make your juice more palatable, juice-in a half lemon or whole lime – I recommend avoiding carrots, beets, or apples because of their high fructose content. Adding lemons or limes can help make the juice easier to drink. If you really need more flavor, certain berries (especially cranberries) contain low amounts of fructose.

  • Save time and prepare your juice once for the entire day – If you’re planning on drinking your juice multiple times during the day, you can do everything at once to save time. But I recommend you pour the juice into a glass Mason or Ball jar filled to the top to avoid oxidation. Place it in the refrigerator right away. This will help to potentially retain the nutritional value for the next 12-24 hours.

  • Get organized when you’re ready to juice – Get all the vegetables washed and ready to go. Don’t peel or slice anything you don’t have to. With most organic veggies, you can just go ahead and juice them without peeling. Some experienced juicers have the entire process (including cleanup) down to about 10 minutes. If they can do it, so can you.

  • Save time in cleanup – If this becomes too big a chore, you’re probably not going to juice. So, find a juicer that’s easy to clean and has the majority of its juicing parts specified as “dishwasher safe.” That way you’ll only need to hand wash a few pieces. Cleanup shouldn’t take much time at all with a high-quality, mostly “dishwasher-safe” juicer.

To me, one of the most important steps in saving time is to get organized. Once you’ve done that, you’ll find that the whole process goes quicker once you get some experience under your belt.

A ‘Nothing Wasted’ Approach

One thing I’ve personally discovered is with the right high-quality juicer, there’s very little wasted from the juiced veggies… and that includes the pulp.

If you’ve not used a juicer before, pulp is a byproduct that’s leftover after you’ve “fed” the veggies through the juicing device. And many folks wonder what to do with the pulp other than throw it away.

Many simply throw the pulp away, but one good way is to recycle it by composting it into your vegetable or ornamental garden.

However, I have an even better solution and that is to eat it. Now, please don’t wrinkle up your nose and fire off a quick “how disgusting” before you hear me out on this.

From a nutritional standpoint, it’s more useful to consume the entire vegetable because the fiber…

  • Serves as a prebiotic which can play an important role in your digestion
  • Helps create raw fuel for your “good” bacteria to thrive in your GI tract

Here are a few suggestions on how to make the healthy pulp quite appetizing…

  • Dress the pulp up with some Himalayan salt and other condiments like balsamic vinegar and crushed red peppers
  • Put the pulp in a dehydrator until it is dry and make vegetable pulp crisps
  • Add a lightly poached egg over the pulp with some melted, fresh raw butter

These are just some ideas to demonstrate how juicing can turn into a “nothing is wasted” approach with the healthy vegetables you choose to juice. Another important juicing-related issue that I’m often asked about is…

‘How Much Juice Should You Drink?’

“As a good rule of thumb, I recommend you drink at least a pint (16 ounces) of fresh juice a day.”

As a rule of thumb, I recommend that you get around a pint a day (16 ounces) but you can certainly juice more.

Probably the best approach as I mentioned above, is to juice your full daily amount at a single time for efficiency purposes. It you do that some time in the morning, you can split up drinking it between morning and the afternoon, or even just before dinner.

Even though vegetable juice is perishable, if you store it right after you juice in the frig using a glass Mason jar, or Ball jar filled to the top, it should be good for about 12-24 hours.

However, it’s real important for you to note that vegetable juice has very little protein and virtually no fat. As loaded as the juice is with nutritious vitamins and minerals, by itself, it’s not a complete food and should be used as a complement to your healthy diet and not a total meal substitute. Ideally, it can be consumed with your meal or as a between-meal hearty snack.

Vegetable juice is simply a phenomenal way for you to get healthful amounts of vegetables without having to actually eat what may be a challenging number of suggested servings.

Organics – The Best Way to Go

With juicing, I believe it is always your best choice to go organic whenever possible. However, I realize you might not always be able to find what you need 100% of the time. The vegetables listed below are the ones you should really focus on buying organic… mainly because these are the ones most often loaded with pesticides (according to the Environmental Working Group):

You may have noticed that two veggies (celery and cucumbers) on this list are two of the three that I recommend you start juicing with. Most grocery and whole food types of stores have organic vegetables you can use… obviously, the fresher the better. A local farmer’s market can be an even better choice for fresh organic produce.

4 Types of Juicers Compared

Finding the right juicer is key in keeping your time and efforts to a minimum. No one, including me, will spend hours prepping, juicing, and cleaning up… it’s just not practical or sustainable. That’s why I focused on finding a juicer that gets the job done efficiently and at a reasonable price.

To see the variety you’re faced with, here’s a handy chart that gives you a closer look at four of the main types of juicers available…

Overall, I favor the efficiency and affordability of masticating juicers. Triturating juicers are very good as well, but just tend to be more expensive. And I’m not convinced you really get that many added benefits for the higher cost.

I would recommend avoiding cheap centrifugal juicers because I feel you’re not going to be happy with the end result. Plus, their high-speed process is noisy and often causes excessive oxidation of the juice. As far as wheatgrass juicers, if all you want to juice is leafy green veggies and wheatgrass, you can save money by purchasing a juicer designed to just do that. However, if you want a juicer that does more (including non-leafy vegetables and fruits), then I recommend a multi-purpose masticating juicer.

With these different types of juicers in mind, it can be a bit of a mine field out there when trying to decide on your best choice. That’s why I put together a comprehensive checklist I’d like to share with you to help save you time searching for a high-quality juicing solution.

To take advantage of the amazing benefits of juicing, finding the right high-quality juicer can be the difference between you juicing on a regular basis, and doing it once and possibly never again.

Over the years, I’ve spent quite a bit of time comparing a number of different types of juicers. Regardless of whether you’re looking for a high-quality juicer to simply juice wheatgrass and leafy greens or want your juicer to do more, here are what I consider to be some of the most important factors.

A good high-quality, versatile veggie juicer…

  • Separates out the insoluble fiber (pulp) – One thing to keep in mind is that a juicer and a blender are not the same. If you use a blender to create your juice, it will be filled up with pulp. Particularly with veggies, you don’t want thick pulp in your juice because to me, it makes it pretty difficult to drink and enjoy. A high-quality juicer will eject the pulp into some sort of receptacle. And as I’ve outlined earlier, there are a few things you can do with the pulp to not waste it.
  • Operates at low speed with a reliable motor – Weak machines with lower power output often have to run at very high rpm (revolutions per minute). These high-speed machines tend to be very noisy (hard not to wake up the entire house during early morning juicing). And if you have a juicer with not enough reliable power, when feeding produce into the juicer, the rpm could significantly drop resulting in potential jams and juicer stoppage. Some high-quality wheatgrass juicers don’t use a motor at all. Instead, these juicers take advantage of human energy to keep the cost low and still produce excellent results.  
  • Incorporates auto-feed mechanism – To help the entire juicing process flow more efficiently, finding a juicer with some sort of auto-feed capability is a must. Instead of having to use a great deal of pressure pushing ingredients into the juicing device, an auto-feed mechanism helps pull the ingredients into the device for more efficient extraction. This can also help you save prep time as well because you won’t have to pre-cut everything up into super small morsels prior to juicing. On the other hand, if all you need is a simple inexpensive wheatgrass juicer, the requirement for an auto-feed mechanism is not a necessity.
  • Is EASY to use and clean – When you’re pressed for time and are trying to be as efficient as possible, you need to be able to clean up quickly. Don’t overlook this key factor.
