Ideally, you should incorporate a variety of exercises into your fitness program… and avoid doing the same exercises the same ways over and over again.
For example, if you've been walking on that same old treadmill at about the same speed for quite some time, there's a good chance your body has built up a relative tolerance.
What does that mean?
By building up this tolerance, you could be missing out on the variety of healthy stresses your body needs to continuously adapt, improve, and grow stronger.
That's why I strongly recommend a wide regimen of exercises consisting of…
- Interval Cardio (Peak Fitness) – "Peak Fitness" is a term I've coined to represent a comprehensive exercise program that includes far more than typical cardio training in the form of sprint cardio. I share my own personal results with this type of exercise coming up.
- Aerobic – Jogging, using an elliptical machine, and walking fast are all examples of aerobic exercise. Although standard aerobic exercises can't compete with Peak Fitness exercises for promoting growth hormone or fat burning, simply getting your heart pumping will improve blood flow and increase the release of endorphins, which act as natural pain killers.
Aerobic exercises will also activate your immune system, and help increase your stamina over time, both of which are important for optimal health.
- Strength Training: Rounding out your exercise program with a strength training routine will ensure that you're really optimizing the possible health benefits of a regular exercise program. Most people believe they need to do 4 or 5 sets of weight lifting per exercise. This is simply not true… 2 or 3 sets at most is all you need with 'intensity' being the key.
- Core Exercises: Your body has 29 core muscles located mostly in your back, abdomen, and pelvis. Pilates and yoga are great for strengthening your core muscles and help provide the foundation for movement throughout your entire body.
- Stretching: My favorite types of stretches are active isolated stretching (AIS) developed by Aaron Mattes, an amazing way to get flexibility back into your system.
Even within these complementary types of exercises, variety is very important… variety is the key that can help keep your passion for exercising alive and drive you to push yourself further and further.
And variety is one of the reasons I occasionally team up with other health and fitness gurus to bring you alternative ways to keep your exercise fires burning.

How I Found a Creative Way to Cut Your Exercise Time with Extraordinary Results
A common complaint both Kathy and I hear on a regular basis is most folks feel they simply do not have enough time to exercise… "It takes too long," is a common phrase we hear.
Well, as part of working together, we plan on incorporating more and more ideas that will help you exercise without burning up a bunch of time.
A perfect example of this is how I personally changed my own long aerobic cardio exercise routine where my run used to take as much as 60 minutes. With my very tight schedule, this was very challenging to fit in on a regular basis.
Now I've totally incorporated Sprint 8 interval cardio into my routine instead of long cardio, with the following fantastic results…
- Cut my cardio time from 60 minutes down to 20, saving 40 minutes on the days I do interval cardio
- Lost over 10 pounds of body fat
- Got my body fat percentage down to 13%
The key with Sprint 8 is to push your heart rate up to, or beyond, your maximum calculated heart rate (220 minus your age) for 20 to 30 seconds… followed by a 90-second recovery period. This is conveniently done and repeated up to 8 times using a recumbent bicycle, elliptical machine, treadmill, or running outside… thus the name Sprint 8.
Combining Sprint 8 into my exercise regimen of strength training, core exercises, and stretching have yielded amazing results without spending hours every time I work out.
Certainly, your own personal results will vary. But the point is there are ways you can cut down the amount of time needed to exercise and still be able to reap the benefits… just like I did.
