According to the Mayo Clinic, exercise “helps to bump up the production of your brain's feel-good neurotransmitters, called endorphins,” “can help you remain calm and clear in everything that you do,” and “give you a sense of command over your body and your life.”

I strongly believe that without fitness, it is virtually impossible to achieve optimal health – and that’s both physical and mental health.

Exercising is one of the most important activities you can do for your health, but you have to do it right to experience the full benefits.

What does “doing it right” mean? For starters, it means incorporating the four principles of exercise into your routine…

Exercising the Right Way: The Three Principles

To make sure you're getting the biggest benefit from your workouts, you'll want to makes sure your exercise routine includes the following three types of exercise:

  1. Interval (Anaerobic) Training: Research is showing that the BEST way to condition your heart and burn fat is NOT to jog or walk steadily for an hour. Instead, it's to alternate short bursts of high-intensity exercise with gentle recovery periods. That is one of the primary reasons I am so fond of the exercises my personal trainer has recently been showing me.

This type of exercise, known as interval training or burst type training, can dramatically improve your cardiovascular fitness and fat-burning capabilities.

Another major benefit of this approach is that it radically decreases the amount of time you spend exercising, while giving you even more benefits. For example, intermittent sprinting produces high levels of chemical compounds called catecholamines, which allow more fat to be burned from under your skin within the exercising muscles.

The resulting increase in fat oxidation increases weight loss. So, short bursts of activity done at a very high intensity can help you reach your optimal weight and level of fitness, in a shorter amount of time.

Strength training
  1. Strength Training: Rounding out your exercise program with a one-set strength training routine will ensure that you're really optimizing the possible health benefits of a regular exercise program.

You need enough repetitions to exhaust your muscles. The weight should be heavy enough that this can be done in fewer than 12 repetitions, yet light enough to do a minimum of four repetitions. It is also important NOT to exercise the same muscle groups every day. They need at least two days of rest to recover, repair and rebuild.

  1. Core Exercises: Your body has 29 core muscles located mostly in your back, abdomen and pelvis. This group of muscles provides the foundation for movement throughout your entire body, and strengthening them can help protect and support your back, make your spine and body less prone to injury and help you gain greater balance and stability.

In a moment, I'll share a fantastic (and quick) way you can target your core, tone and strengthen your entire body, stimulate your overall circulation, find a renewed sense of vitality and energy, loosen and warm up your muscles, ease your body's tightness and de-stress after a long day.

It's a super simple and fun way to introduce exercise back into your life no matter your age or fitness level.

But, first, I'd like to acknowledge something you've probably experienced time and time again…

It's one thing to rationally know that exercise can be helpful to your health and wellbeing, right? But finding the time and motivation to exercise on a regular basis can be a whole different story, can't it?

"Not Enough Time, Energy, or Motivation…" Are You Really Too Busy to Help Yourself?

A recent national poll indicated that nearly one-third of adults exercise less than once a week, more than half don’t get the recommended amount of exercise, and one out of four don’t exercise at all.

When asked why, most respondents said they were simply not motivated, were too tired, too busy, or just don’t like exercising in the first place.

How much do you exercise?

If you knew that something as simple as a 10- to 30-minute exercise routine a day could provide the groundwork for significantly combating the effects of stress in your life, would you finally commit to working out regularly?

Would you make relaxing, restoring and re-energizing yourself a priority?

Regretfully, if you’re like most Americans, the answer is NO.

The 2010 Stress in America survey makes this alarming point very clear:

“Adults seem to understand the importance of healthy behaviors like managing their stress levels, eating right, getting enough sleep and exercise, but they report experiencing challenges practicing these healthy behaviors. They report being too busy as a primary barrier preventing them from better managing their stress, and a lack of motivation, energy and time as the chief reasons for not being more physically active.”

There are many ways, of course, but I’ve found great success simply by:

  1. Varying my exercise routine, and
  2. Finding new and fun ways to get a whole-body workout.

I currently have no less than 150 exercises that I can mix and match in any given workout. That means I’m never bored with my routine.

When you mix up your routine, you can eliminate the boredom that so many people experience by doing one type of exercise only.

Further, I’ve also found that it’s really important to resist focusing on the negatives, like the work and the time it takes to stay active. It’s much more empowering to focus on how great you’ll feel as you target different areas of your body in every workout.

By gently updating the way you think and feel about exercise, you’ll discover that your resistance will diminish over time and you’ll begin to have intensely positive associations with exercise.

This is especially true once you start to feel the short- and long-term benefits of exercising regularly and continue to vary what type of exercises your workouts include.
